Cats

“Meow!” my cat, Kitty, purred at me, as if chiding me for not paying attention to her. Kitty had been the source of entertainment for my family as a playful and mischievous kitten, always getting into scraps of trouble. However, as the years went by, Kitty 'mellowed' and became more ‘matured’ in her behaviour.

Although Kitty had matured and grown out of her playful antics, we would always remember all the “troubles” and “adventures” that she got into. There was one incident that would be carved into my memory forever. I remember vividly that it happened when Kitty was only a year old. At that time, Kitty was at her most mischievous stage. She would always be running out of the house to find her cat ‘friends’ to play with and inviting them back to our house at times. My maid was very fond of Kitty and always had some food prepared for Kitty’s friends.

However, on that eventful day, as I was about to enter the house after school, I heard lots of sharp piercing sounds of hissings and meowing from the direction of my garden. I rushed into the garden and witnessed a scene that I would always remember. My maid was shouting and screaming hysterically at a group of cats which was surrounding Kitty. The cats were oblivious to the screams and shouts from my maid as they hissed and showed their canines to Kitty. Kitty was arching her back, with her hairs on their ends, as she prepared to fight with them. Immediately, I dashed to the bathroom, grabbed a pail of water, and ran back to the garden whereby I flung its contents onto the group of stray cats which were picking on Kitty. The cats were taken by surprise as they jumped into the air as the cold water dashed upon them. Following that, my maid, who was armed with a broomstick, proceeded to whack and hit at the strays in an attempt to chase them out of the garden. One of the tomcats ran out of the gate, with the rest of the cats following in his trail.

As the cats vanished from our sight, my maid revealed that the group of cats which frequently followed Kitty home gradually got bolder and more demanding. It seemed that they were not satisfied with the amount of food that my maid had left for them and tried to snatch Kitty’s food from her. As a result, Kitty got into a fight with them. She scratched a few of them and was subsequently surrounded by the whole group. I shivered it dawned upon me the dire consequences that would befall Kitty if I had been late from returning from school. However, I think Kitty learned her lesson from that day onwards as she stayed close to home and seldom wandered far off. Her group of cat friends was also not seen again.
