Cat

Mrs. Lam tossed about in bed, unable to fall asleep. She yawned again for the sixth time, she was obviously exhausted by the incessant mewing outside the gate kept her wide awake. There they went again. If only those creatures would mew softly. Unfortunately, they started snarling at one another; the gentle mews turning aggressive. The cats were probably fighting over the food left by her neighbour, Mrs. Song. It was a common sight
To see her neighbour leaving exposed leftover food near the dustbins in the evenings. Mrs. Song once shared that she did not wish to waste any unfinished food and that explained her ‘considerate’ act.

Mrs. Lam was not against her decision but the sight that followed was often far from appealing. The stray cats would appear near midnight, fighting among themselves over the food and turn over dustbins to salvage whatever food they could get. Not only did Mrs. Lam find the noise annoying, being the light sleeper, she also felt disgusted by the mess left behind.

After four consecutive days of disturbed sleep, Mrs. Lam decided to handle this dilemma. She would have to discuss the matter with Mrs. Song in the most tactful way she possibly could. There was a tinge of hope within that it might not turn out to be as nasty as it might. The next day, Mrs. Lam prepared a simple desert for the Song family. She presented it before their dinner and a surprised Mrs. Song was most touched by her king gesture. They started talking about the day’s events.

Just then, a stray cat went towards the dustbins. Seizing the golden opportunity, Mrs. Lam asked casually if Mrs. Song could hear the din made by the cats at night. To her utmost surprise, Mrs. Song expressed that her husband had just complained to her about it, she attributed that to the stray cats that gathered every night; Mrs. Song went on to say that she would no longer want to leave any food for them.

What a welcome comment from her! Mrs. Lam was overjoyed. She congratulated herself silently for not impulsively confronting Mrs. Song. The matter was settled in such an amiable and certainly agreeable way. What a relief for Mrs. Lam!
