Cats

As quiet as a shadow, Puss came into my life. I walked out to feed my cats one morning and there she was sitting apart from the others. The first thing i noticed was her very pregnant tummy. Great, I thought, she thinks this is a feline maternity hospital. The next morning i dubbed her Puss and started calling her by name. She hissed. I extended my hand and she took a swipe at it. Two weeks passed without progress.

One day it was raining heavily. Over all the noise of the storm, i heard a definite meowing at the kitchen door. I opened it to find Puss in a highly agitated state. She was pacing to and fro and practically screaming at me. She repeated the process twice until i realized that it wanted me to follow her. Grabbing an umbrella, we dashed into the solid sheet of rain. She led and i followed her to our fence.

There beneath a shrub, in a little burrow she had made, were three precious, newborn kittens. With trepidation and trembling hands, i picked up one of the babies and held it close to my arms and snatched the other two with my hands and ran for comfort of my house with Puss at my heels.

Mission accomplished! They were okay but i was soaked. I covered them with warm towels and left them alone to change my clothes and dry off. Upon my return, i placed the babies in a box and carried them outside to the corner of the porch to meet their mother. Without hesitation, she climed into the box and began to groom her children. After she was assured that they were unharmed, she gave me a look of pure gratitude and let me pat on her head, without hissing. Trust had been established! She was truly a hero as well!

Thereafter, we shared the kittens. She allowed me to hold and cuddle them whenever i chose. Puss then became my newest best friend, following me behind wherever i go in my house. She thinks I am the hero of this story, but we know who the real hero is!

Cats -

Cats. The bane of my miserable life. Everyday, in this ill-starred area of the city, there are at least five damn cat fights!

When I had rented this apartment, I had no idea that the surrounding area was over-run with scavenger cats. The first night, I earned an insomia. What with the constant mewing, scratching, hissing and occasional series of dog barks. If was not in such a financial crisis, it would have taken a herd of angry bulls to keep me in that place.

Eventually, after living with something for so long, it became such a normal thing that it felt so off to not hear the sounds of battles between the dogs and the cats and among the cats themselves. I tried living elsewhere for a day once. I did not get a wink of sleep. There was just something comforting about the familiarity of the hissing of the cats.

Yes, this was really like needing coffee in the morning to get out of bed. Just, in this case, it was needing a few yowls to go to bed.

CATS ~ *

“How many kittens have your cat delivered?” I asked Aunt Amy, excited. I had always longed to play with Aunt Amy’s kittens.

“Five, my dear,” Aunt Amy said to me. Aunt Amy was my favourite aunt. She always brings me presents whenever she comes back from her business trips. She invited me to her house today to take a look at the kittens.

Under the mother cat’s watchful gaze, the puppies frolicked playfully. No one knows what suddenly triggered the mother cat’s sudden, vicious attack. Maybe, as I lifted the puppies high in the air, it thought that I meant to harm them. Its unblinking eyes bore steadily into my eyes. I will never forget that hair-raising sound. Just as I was about to dodged its attack, its paw slashed through the air and landed heavily into my forehead.

When I woke up, I found myself lying in the hospital. When I tried to get up, there was a stinging pain in my head. “Ouch,” I murmured.

“Be careful, you just had five stitches on your forehead. I’m sorry about what happened, Gayle,” Aunt Amy said.

“It’s nothing,” I replied.

From then on, whenever I saw cats, even in books or pictures, my body will be shaking like a leaf. I have phobia for cats now.

Cats

“Meow!” my cat, Kitty, purred at me, as if chiding me for not paying attention to her. Kitty had been the source of entertainment for my family as a playful and mischievous kitten, always getting into scraps of trouble. However, as the years went by, Kitty 'mellowed' and became more ‘matured’ in her behaviour.

Although Kitty had matured and grown out of her playful antics, we would always remember all the “troubles” and “adventures” that she got into. There was one incident that would be carved into my memory forever. I remember vividly that it happened when Kitty was only a year old. At that time, Kitty was at her most mischievous stage. She would always be running out of the house to find her cat ‘friends’ to play with and inviting them back to our house at times. My maid was very fond of Kitty and always had some food prepared for Kitty’s friends.

However, on that eventful day, as I was about to enter the house after school, I heard lots of sharp piercing sounds of hissings and meowing from the direction of my garden. I rushed into the garden and witnessed a scene that I would always remember. My maid was shouting and screaming hysterically at a group of cats which was surrounding Kitty. The cats were oblivious to the screams and shouts from my maid as they hissed and showed their canines to Kitty. Kitty was arching her back, with her hairs on their ends, as she prepared to fight with them. Immediately, I dashed to the bathroom, grabbed a pail of water, and ran back to the garden whereby I flung its contents onto the group of stray cats which were picking on Kitty. The cats were taken by surprise as they jumped into the air as the cold water dashed upon them. Following that, my maid, who was armed with a broomstick, proceeded to whack and hit at the strays in an attempt to chase them out of the garden. One of the tomcats ran out of the gate, with the rest of the cats following in his trail.

As the cats vanished from our sight, my maid revealed that the group of cats which frequently followed Kitty home gradually got bolder and more demanding. It seemed that they were not satisfied with the amount of food that my maid had left for them and tried to snatch Kitty’s food from her. As a result, Kitty got into a fight with them. She scratched a few of them and was subsequently surrounded by the whole group. I shivered it dawned upon me the dire consequences that would befall Kitty if I had been late from returning from school. However, I think Kitty learned her lesson from that day onwards as she stayed close to home and seldom wandered far off. Her group of cat friends was also not seen again.

Cat

Mrs. Lam tossed about in bed, unable to fall asleep. She yawned again for the sixth time, she was obviously exhausted by the incessant mewing outside the gate kept her wide awake. There they went again. If only those creatures would mew softly. Unfortunately, they started snarling at one another; the gentle mews turning aggressive. The cats were probably fighting over the food left by her neighbour, Mrs. Song. It was a common sight
To see her neighbour leaving exposed leftover food near the dustbins in the evenings. Mrs. Song once shared that she did not wish to waste any unfinished food and that explained her ‘considerate’ act.

Mrs. Lam was not against her decision but the sight that followed was often far from appealing. The stray cats would appear near midnight, fighting among themselves over the food and turn over dustbins to salvage whatever food they could get. Not only did Mrs. Lam find the noise annoying, being the light sleeper, she also felt disgusted by the mess left behind.

After four consecutive days of disturbed sleep, Mrs. Lam decided to handle this dilemma. She would have to discuss the matter with Mrs. Song in the most tactful way she possibly could. There was a tinge of hope within that it might not turn out to be as nasty as it might. The next day, Mrs. Lam prepared a simple desert for the Song family. She presented it before their dinner and a surprised Mrs. Song was most touched by her king gesture. They started talking about the day’s events.

Just then, a stray cat went towards the dustbins. Seizing the golden opportunity, Mrs. Lam asked casually if Mrs. Song could hear the din made by the cats at night. To her utmost surprise, Mrs. Song expressed that her husband had just complained to her about it, she attributed that to the stray cats that gathered every night; Mrs. Song went on to say that she would no longer want to leave any food for them.

What a welcome comment from her! Mrs. Lam was overjoyed. She congratulated herself silently for not impulsively confronting Mrs. Song. The matter was settled in such an amiable and certainly agreeable way. What a relief for Mrs. Lam!

Cats-by LiQi

Tom peered out of the window, glaring angrily at his little brother who was taking his leftover lunch downstairs. " For the last time Dick, you are not allowed to feed any stray animals with our food. Mum says so." Dick gave his brother a cheeky grin." Well Mum says you cannot play any computer games until the exams are over but you still do. Since when did you become so obedient?" "WHAT? You...." Dick ran downstairs before his brother could finish saying the swear word.
Tom growled. Why did his brother care so much about those cats which gathered downstairs everyday anyway? They were smelly, a nusciance to the enviroment and they multiplied faster than a entire warren of rabbits. Another thing: Tom hated cats. He positively loathed them. Firstly, some of them came upstairs, outside the apartment where they lived, and spent the entire night seranding each other with their yowls. Secondly, they had dragged his geography project, which he had sweated blood doing for a whole month, downstairs after a karaoke binge to play with. Lastly, they acted cute around Dick, and only Tom knew the monsters that they could be- scratching and spitting and fighting.
The day the government announced that all cats were to be taken away because of the SARS scare was the happiest one in Tom's life. He immediately called the Town Council using a public phone and as adult a voice as he could manage."Hello. I would like to complain that there are many cats around here. Yes, because of the SARS scare. You'll send someone around to take care of it? Good, thank you very much." That afternoon a big truck came and carted all the cats- big ones, small ones, fat ones, thin ones, white ones, black ones and all those in between, away. Tom sighed a sastifacted sigh. "Well that's that." he managed to say with a smile that ran two times around his face.
Tom and Dick's father tore open the utility bill. He ran his eyes over it. Then he looked solemnly at the boys. "Well, children it seems we have a problem here." Tom raised his eyes but Dick continued staring at his eggplant casserole. He had not been himself since the dissaperance of the cats. "It seems the bill is charging extra for " pest extermination"." He paused. Tom could not hide a guilty smile. Dick saw it and hissed, "You sadist! I guessed as much!" across the dining table. Tom stuck his tounge out. " "Due to the sheer number of cats that were to be removed, we apologise that we had to include part of our bill in your bill as the cost ran beyond our budget." " Their father stopped reading. " See? This is what you get when you try to be too kind towards those stray cats, Dick." "Sorry, Dad." mumbled Dick. " As a result, I shall cut off half of your allowance.Tom!" Tom jumped two feet out of his skin. What now? " You have not taught you younger brother correctly." Their mother nodded." It is your duty to do so." she agreed." You are the eldest here." "As a result, we are going to cut off a third-" "No darling, half." "Ahem. Half of your allowance. We need the money anyway. Do you get me?" their father asked. "Yes, Dad." they answered.Their parents returned to their dinner.
So Tom and Dick stared at each other, and both said: " That's YOUR fault."

Conclusion - Sex Education Should Be Taught In Schools

In all, Sex Education, most definetly should be taught in schools. Surveys have shown that a resounding majority of the students themselves prefer to learn about sex in school compared to homes. The knowledge gained would definetly not go to waste in their future years. If they desire to learn it in school, then let them do so.

Thank You.
